These days, the Brno Exhibition Centre is hosting a unique event called URBIS The Smart Cities Meetup, which is focused on smart solutions for cities and municipalities. The opening ceremony was attended yesterday by important representatives of Czech politics and industry, including ministers, chief executives, the mayor of Brno, the governor of the South Moravian Region and the director general of the CzechInvest agency, which co-organised the event.
In his opening remarks, the Director General of CzechInvest emphasised the importance of this event at the national level, especially thanks to the breadth, quality and intensity of joint work and systemic support from four key ministries – the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Regional Development, the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Transport.
“Smart cities are key to the quality of life of citizens, the protection of the environment, and making our cities competitive. The CzechInvest Agency supports this area with a number of activities and I am pleased that we can participate in making the Czech Republic one of the leaders in the field of smart cities,” said Jan Michal, Director General of the CzechInvest agency, adding: “It is the joint efforts of key national players in cooperation with the Brno Exhibition Centre and regional partners that have borne fruit in the form of the URBIS trade fair offering a link between startups and municipalities with an accompanying professional programme.”
This year’s URBIS fair welcomed 65 exhibitors from innovative companies and technology startups and will offer 45 professional and social events. Among the exhibitors are eight startups incubated in CzechInvest programmes, seven of which are part of the Technology Incubation project and one startup, ECOTEN urban comfort, cooperates with the ESA BIC Czech Republic space incubator. CzechInvest also has a consulting place at this fair within the national exhibitors’ section. Filip Krůta, Director of EcoTech HUB, and Jan Bízik, Director of Mobility Innovation HUB, collaborated on the expert programme in the areas of eco-technology and smart mobility.
The startup that represented the Czech Republic at the international competition Creative Business Cup 2024 in Copenhagen also presented itself at the event. “We also see the future of smart mobility in a change in the understanding of cycling and the use of electric bicycles not only for personal transport, but also for transporting cargo, so-called. last mile delivery. By our participation at the fair and in the panel discussions, we want to open up the topic and spark a wider debate,” says Zuzana Malinová from E-Cafe Bike, which is developing innovative electric cargo trolleys Komuter, which can be attached behind a bicycle, enabling fast and comfortable transport of larger loads. An example of the use of the trolley can be seen directly at the fair as a solution supplied to the city of Jihlava, which uses it as a mobile information centre.
URBIS The Smart Cities Meetup takes place in Brno from 4. to 6. June 2024 and is open to all those looking for new contacts, inspiration and best practices for implementing smart solutions in their municipalities, cities and regions.
